Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist who became one of the wealthiest people in 19th-century America through the growth of his steel business. After selling Carnegie Steel in 1901, he devoted much of his fortune to philanthropy. Guided by his belief in the “Gospel of Wealth,” he donated nearly 90% of his fortune to support libraries, education, science and world peace, leaving a lasting legacy of public service.
