Dhanpat Rai Srivastava (31 July 1880 – 8 October 1936), better known by his pen name Munshi Premchand, was one of the foremost writers of modern Hindi and Urdu literature. He pioneered social fiction in Hindi and Urdu, bringing into literature the lives and struggles of ordinary people, particularly those facing poverty, caste discrimination and social inequality.
Premchand is regarded as one of the greatest Hindi writers of the early twentieth century and among the most celebrated authors of the Indian subcontinent. His best-known works include Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar and Idgah. His literary legacy comprises more than a dozen novels, around 300 short stories, essays and translations of Indian and foreign works into Hindi. In this issue, we present a selection of his quotes.
