He decided to go to Africa as a medical missionary rather than as a pastor and so began his studiesin medicine at the University of Strasbourg. After completing his M.D., he founded his hospital at Lambaréné in French Equatorial Africa in the year 1913. The hospital expanded by leaps and bounds and by 1960, it became 500 bedded residential hospitals.
At Lambaréné, Schweitzer was a doctor and a surgeon in the hospital, pastor of a congregation, administrator of a village, superintendent of buildings and grounds, writer of scholarly books, commentator on contemporary history, musician, host to countless visitors. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1952. This multifaceted personality died on September 4, 1965 at his place of work -Lambaréné.In this issue, we have given some of his quotable quotes.
