This Month Newsletter, May 2011

This month we bring you a wonderful treasure-chest of eco-philosophies and actions. We have Gregory Bateson talking about connectedness. He asks: What thoughts can I share regarding the total biological world in which we live and have our being? How is it put together? … What is the pattern which connects all the living creatures? Its an important question and Bateson feels that Most of us have lost that sense of unity of biosphere and humanity which would bind and reassure us all -with an affirmation of beauty.

The question of beauty is what gets discussed next in the newsletter. Eco-architecture and cost-effective building technolgy are fine. But are they beautiful? We look at this question. The beauty that eco-architecture evokes is not the type where extravagant structures are needed. They are organic and integral to the building and is in tune with the environment. An interplay of inner space and natural light allows the builder to experiment with forms in dynamic architecture. In this newsletter we take a look at it.

This summer at VK NARDEP we undertook the summer-camps for children for inculcating in them scientific temper. This includes elucidation of scientific principles through simple and intersting experiments and also making them engage in group activities. They also undertook trips to hills and sea to get in tune with nature. VK NARDEP also started the renovation and revival of water harvesting structure at Murugankuntram. Also read about other important happenings at VK NARDEP.

Wisdom traditions from across the word speak of sacred ecology. This month we have a poem of Tagore; a hymn that was an eternal inspiration to Mahatma Gandhi; how tradition tends environment in native American tradition; Guru Nanak on the realtion between nature, humanity and Divinity and also a story by David Suzuki that reflects an age-old Upanishad story but in a modern setting.

You can read it all HERE.

We at VK NARDEP, sincerely wish this newsletter will provide you all a very pleasant reading experience.
