From Blissful Wisdom to Tainted Vision of Development

Dear Friends,

Satish Kumar (born 9 August 1936) has been a Jain monk, nuclear disarmament advocate, pacifist, and is the current editor of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine. Now living in England, Kumar is the founder and Director of Programmes of the Schumacher College international center for ecological studies. He insists that reverence for nature should be at the heart of every political and social debate. Defending criticism that his goals are unrealistic, he has said, Look at what realists have done for us. They have led us to war and climate change, poverty on an unimaginable scale, and wholesale ecological destruction. Half of humanity goes to bed hungry because of all the realistic leaders in the world. I tell people who call me “unrealistic” to show me what their realism has done. Realism is an outdated, overplayed and wholly exaggerated concept. In this issue we have given a few of his quotable quotes.

This month, we are giving coverage to a TED Talk by a Swamiji from America where he explains the simple universal principle that “in giving, we receive” through the beautiful story of Redwood trees.

In happenings section, we have covered various training programmes such as: (i) Hydroponic technology, Azolla as a Bio-feed, Holistic Sustainable Livelihood, (ii) Ferro-cement technology (iii) Traditional Siddha Varma Bone setting practices, (iv) Bio-methanation technology etc. along with usual Networking.

In the wisdom section, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore explains that True Education is “Exploration, Creation and Connection with the surroundings”, the famous Fritjof Capra and Gunter Pauli explain beautifully the “Cyclicity of Nature” and finally environmentalist Smt.Kamala Chowdhry describes the horror of “Tainted Vision of Development”.
