1987-88: Vivekananda Kendra's natural resources development project started with humble beginnings of chemically treated fire-inhibiting thatching for economically weaker sections of the society.

 

 

 

1988-89/1993-96: VK-NARDEP makes extensive use of cost-effective construction technology in creating rural community infrastructure. This includes water storage structures, sanitary infrastructure and group houses.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1991-92/2000-01 Inspired by Laurie Baker and Mahatma Gandhi, Vivekananda Kendra- Natural Resources Development Project has developed a host of cost-effective building technologies. In 2000-01 Hudco recognized VK-NARDEP as a rural building center for cost-effective building technologies.

 

 

 

2005-2006: Vivekananda Kendra - NARDEP started giving training to masons on these cost-effective eco-technologies and also started conducting awareness camps for not only masons but also Self Help Group (SHG) members and also Panchayat presidents. It also conducted training as well as awareness camps for engineers and engineering students. Tamil Nadu government has recognized VK-NARDEP as 'Institute of national repute' working in the field of construction technology.

 

2006-2007: Avai Agam - an SHG Federation building for herbal medicine preparation, was constructed using fly ash.

2008:2009 A seminar for architects and engineering students on cost-effective construction and disaster resistant housing was conducted by VK-NARDEP and we have also published various books on construction technologies.
